Representatives from U.S. Department of State visit Tajik counternarcotics agency

DUSHANBE, December 13, 2012, Asia-Plus — Issues related to further expansion of cooperation in combating drug trafficking were a major topic of a meeting of Rustam Nazarov, Director of the Drug Control Agency (DCA under the President of Tajikistan with Mr. Dan Rosenblum, the Coordinator of U.S. Assistance to Europe and Eurasia and persons accompanying him that took place here on December 12, the DCA press center reports.

In the course of the talks, Tajik drug control chief expressed gratitude to the Government of the United States for assistance provided to Tajik law enforcement authorities.

The sides reportedly expressed satisfaction with the level of cooperation between relevant agencies of the two countries in combating drug trafficking.

Rustam Nazarov, in particular, briefed the guests on the current drug situation in Tajikistan, Afghanistan and the Central Asian region as well as measures taken by the Tajik authorities to combat trafficking.

He also informed the delegation of the U.S. Department of State about cooperation between drug control agencies of Tajikistan and neighboring countries in combating illicit drug trafficking, the source said.

Mr. Rosenblum reportedly highly appraised DCA’s achievements in combating drug trafficking and noted that activities of other Tajik law enforcement agencies in that direction had improved as well.

Mr. Daniel Rosenblum is the Coordinator of U.S. Assistance to Europe and Eurasia. Working within the State Department’s Bureau for European and Eurasian Affairs, and coordinating closely with the Bureau for South and Central Asian Affairs and the Office of the Director of Foreign Assistance, Mr. Rosenblum oversees all U.S. Government assistance to more than thirty countries in Europe and Eurasia, with primary focus on the Balkans and the former Soviet Union, including Central Asia.  He coordinates the programs of more than a dozen U.S. government agencies and State Department bureaus involved in U.S. economic, democratic, security, and humanitarian assistance in the region, and designs assistance strategies that support U.S. foreign policy priorities.  He also plays the lead role in allocating foreign assistance budgets appropriated by Congress, and works closely with foreign governments, multilateral institutions, and NGOs to ensure that U.S. foreign aid is used efficiently and effectively.
