DUSHANBE, March 15, 2013, Asia-Plus — Russia will do everything in its power to maintain peace and stability in Central Asia.
Army General Valery Gerasimov, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation stated this in Dushanbe on March 15 after a meeting with Lieutenant-General Ramil Nadyrov, the Chief of the General Staff of Tajikistan’s Armed Forces.
He noted that in line with agreements reached during an official visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Tajikistan in October 2012 the Ministries of Defense of Russia and Tajikistan had set up working groups headed by the General Staff Chiefs of the two countries.
A regular meeting of those groups took place in Dushanbe on Friday.
Gen Gerasimov confirmed once again Russia’s readiness to provide assistance to Tajikistan with modernization of its armed forces.
“I stress that there are no problems between our countries that could not be solved,” Gerasimov noted.
Lieutenant-General Ramil Nadyrov, for his part, noted that the defense ministries of the two countries were working to ensure implementation of agreements reached between the presidents of Tajikistan and Russia in Dushanbe in October 2012.
On Friday March 15, Gerasimov also held talks with Tajik Minister of Defense, Colonel-General Sherali Khairulloyev. The two reportedly discussed a number of issues related to military and military-technical cooperation between Tajikistan and the Russian Federation.
We will recall that Gerasimov, heading a Russian military delegation, arrived in Dushanbe Thursday evening on a two-day visit. The main purpose of the visit for the Russian military delegation is to discuss with Tajik officials bilateral military and military-technical cooperation between Tajikistan and Russia.
