CIS chief prosecutors agree to expand cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism

DUSHANBE, September 26, 2014, Asia-Plus — The 24th meeting of the Coordinating Council of Prosecutors General of CIS Member Nations, presided over by Tajik Prosecutor-General Sherkhon Salimzoda, took place in Dushanbe on September 25.

The meeting participants included chief prosecutors from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan as well as deputy chief prosecutors from Azerbaijan and Russia.  Deputy head of the CIS Executive Committee and executive secretary the Coordinating Council of Prosecutors General of CIS Member Nations also attended the meeting.

Fourteen issues have been tabled to the meeting’s agenda.  The meeting participants, in particular, exchanged views on experience of work of chief prosecutor’s offices of the CIS member nations and discussed the progress of implementation of the CIS programs of cooperation in combating crime, terrorism and other violent manifestations of extremism, drug trafficking and human trafficking, designed for the period from 2014 to 2018.

Members of the Coordinating Council also discussed issues related to cooperation between the chief prosecutor’s offices of the CIS member nations in combating corruption, protecting frights of citizens and implementing international crime prevention agreements.

“The meeting participants discussed the experience of work of the chief prosecutor’s offices from the CIS member nations, analytical report and consolidated report on the crime situation, investigative work, prosecutors’ activities and the practice of implementation of international agreements on combating crime,” Tajik chief prosecutor told journalists after the meeting.

The next meeting of the Coordinating Council of Prosecutors General of CIS Member Nations will take place in Kazakhstan in 2015.

The Coordinating Council of Prosecutors General of CIS Member States was established on December 7, 1995 following the joint decision of the CIS chief prosecutors.  Under the decision of the CIS Council of Heads of State dated January 25, 2000, the status of International Body was granted to the Coordinating Council of Prosecutors General of CIS Member States.

Current members of the Coordinating Council of Prosecutors General of CIS Member States include representatives of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, and Ukraine.
