The Coordination Service of CIS Council of Border Troops Commanders assess the current situation along Central Asia’s borders as extremely tense.

“Increase in concentration of militants along Afghan-Tajik border is directly connected with the latest developments in Middle East, particularly in Syria, where the majority of territories are coming under control of the government forces,” Chairman of the Coordination Service of CIS Council of Border Troops Commanders Colonel-General Alexander Manilov, who is also Deputy Commander of Russia’s Border Troops noted at the 5th scientific-and-practical conference of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO RATS) in the Uzbek capital, Tashkent, on November 1, according to Sputnik Tajikistan.

The Russian Border Service deputy chief said there are many natives of the CIS member nations among militants who have been force out of Syria, “and they today moved to other countries, including Afghanistan.”

“We assess the situation that has emerged on this direction of the Central Asian region as extremely tense,” Manilov said.

According to him, the situation along the borders of Central Asia’s nations with Afghanistan was discussed at the 78th session of the CIS Council of Commanders of Border Troops that took place in Baku, Azerbaijan on October 19.

Recall, the Baku session’s agenda included 9 main issues on strengthening the security of the member states’ borders.  The session ended with the signing of 25 documents, added Manilov.

The majority of the documents reportedly concerned the outcome of discussions on the situation at the borders of the two countries, including the border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan.
