Resident of the Farkhor district (Khatlon province) has got a jail term of 30 years for plotting an attack on the Russian military base in Tajikistan. Speaking in the court, he said he does not regret what he did and he will stay true to the oath given to Islamic State (IS).
The Dushanbe court has sentenced the 39-year-old resident of the Farkhor district Bahriddin Sharofuddinov to 30 years in prison, an official source at the Dushanbe city court told Asia-Plus in an interview. He will serve his term in a high-security penal colony.
Sharofuddinov was reportedly found guilty of plotting an attack on the Russian military base deployed in Tajikistan.
According to the source, Sharofuddinov had earlier been convicted in Russian Federation of his calls to extremist and terrorist activity. In 2004 and 2007, he was reportedly sentenced in Russia to various prison terms.
The investigation has established that Sharofuddinov got into contact with representatives of the IS terror group via social networks when serving his jail term in a penal colony in the Russian city of Perm. He reportedly swore an oath of allegiance to IS terror group via Internet. Sharofuddinov returned to Tajikistan in August 2017.
He was detained by law enforcement officers in Farkhor in September last year. When searching his home, police officers found explosives and detonators.
Speaking in the court, Sharofuddinov said he does not regret what he did and he will stay true to the oath sworn to Islamic State (IS).
