Japan supplies US$8 million worth medical equipment to fight COVID-19 in Tajikistan

On Thursday December 2, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tajikistan Takayuki Miyashita, and Tajikistan Minister of Health and Social Protection of the Population Jamoliddin Abdullozoda attended the handover ceremony of the Project for Support of Tajikistan in the Fight against Infectious Diseases and the Development of Health System under the Japanese Economic and Social Development Program.

Japan’s Embassy in Dushanbe says the Government of Japan allocated 5.7 million U.S. dollars for the implementation of the project.

The emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic reportedly posed major challenges for medical system of Tajikistan to treat COVID-19 patients, especially due to the lack of needed medical equipment. In response to the request of Ministry of Health and Social Protection of the Population of Tajikistan (MoHSPP), the Government of Japan procured Portable X-ray Machines (5), oxygen concentrators (50), ICU beds (50), autoclaves (10), bedside monitors (45), defibrillators (5), portable water purifiers (150), hospital beds (50), and ultrasound equipment (40).  All these medical equipment will be supplied to the central hospitals of cities and districts of Tajikistan.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Miyashita made a following remark: “It is my great pleasure to hand over high-quality medical equipment in front of us, mainly Japanese products, to the Government of Tajikistan.  The world is still facing various threats.  Recently the new variant of COVID 19 “Omicron” has been found and suddenly spreading to the world.  Every country needs to increase its preparedness against new wave of this infectious disease.  I am extremely happy to witness that Japan is contributing to that aim also here in Tajikistan.  I hope the equipment will contribute to fighting against the new diseases. I am sure the equipment will be maintained properly and used for many years to come.”

On the same day, Ambassador Miyashita, Tajikistan Heath Minister Jamoliddin Abdullozoda and Chief Representative of JICA Tajikistan Office Muneo Takasaka attended the handover ceremony for the Project for Provision of Oxy-generation System and Medical Equipment under the Project of Improving Material and Child Health Care System in Khatlon Province (Phase II).  The Government of Japan allocated 2,29 million U.S. dollars for the implementation of this project.  In terms of the project six oxygen generation systems, including oxygen generation stations, filling stations, additional cylinders for filling purposes, power generators and automatic voltage regulators will be provided to 13 hospitals in Khatlon province, 8 hospitals in Dushanbe and 1 hospital in Tursunzoda city.
