Tajik official listed among people holding amounts worth million in Credit Swiss accounts

An extraordinary leak of data from Credit Suisse, one of the world’s most iconic banks, is exposing how the bank held hundreds of millions of dollars for heads of state, intelligence officials, sanctioned businessmen and human rights abusers, among many others.

A self-described whistle-blower leaked data on more than 18,000 bank accounts, collectively holding more than $100 billion, to the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung.  The newspaper shared the data with a nonprofit journalism group, the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), and 46 other news organizations around the world.

The data covers accounts that were open from the 1940s until well into the 2010s but not the bank’s current operations.

Newly appointed Mayor of Hisor, Qosim Rohbar is listed among holding amounts worth millions of dollars in Credit Suisse accounts.

Qosim Rohbar reportedly has 9.7 million U.S. dollars in his account in Credit Suisse.

OCCRP, in particular, notes that “a career official allied with President Emomali Rahmon, Qosim Rohbar served as governor of Sughd province and minister of agriculture, giving him control over one of the country’s main source of foreign currency: cotton.”

The publication authors emphasized that Tajikistan’s legislation prohibits public servants from holding overseas bank accounts or property.

From 1996 to 2006, Qosim Rohbar serves as Governor of Sughd Province.

From December 6, 2006 to January 2008, he served is head of the ruling People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT)’s organization in Sughd province.

From 2008 to March 10, 2015, Qosim Rohbar served as Minister of Agriculture of Tajikistan.

From March 10, 2015 to January 2022, he served as Chairman of the Local Community Development Committee.

On January 27, 2022, Qosim Rohbar was appointed Mayor of Hisor City.   .
