98 new HIV infection cases registered in Sughd in Jan-Sept 2010

KHUJAND, October 19, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Over the first nine months of this year, 98 new HIV infection cases have been registered in Sughd province, bringing the total number of the officially registered HIV sufferers in the area to 530, according to the Sughd AIDS.

“Of 98 HIV sufferers detected this year, 70 are men and 28 are women,” aid the source. “Persons aged 30 to 39 constitute 50 percent (49 people) of the overall number of HIV sufferers detected in Sughd over the report period”

The first HIC infection case was registered in northern in 2001 and men constitute 73 percent (259) and women constitute 27 percent (141) of the overall number of officially registered HIV sufferers (530) in the area.  There are 4 HIV-infected children under the age of 4 and the same umber of HIV-infected children aged 5 to 15 in the province.

“Of 530 HIV sufferers officially registered in the area, 219, or 42 percent, have contracted the virus through injection drug use, 159 others (29 percent) have contracted the HIV infection sexually, and five HIV sufferers have been infected through a transfusion of infected blood,” the source said.
