Chinese nationals account for more 60% of labor migrants working in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE, January 25, 2011, Asia-Plus — More than 2,360 labor migrants, with more than 60 percent (1,427 people) of them being Chinese nationals, are currently working in Tajikistan, Valijon Kulov, the head of the department for labor market studies at the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, told a news conference in Dushanbe on January 24.

“The migration service has also registered 240 Afghans, 124 Turkish nationals, 101 citizens of India and citizens of other foreign counties working in Tajikistan,” Kulov said.

In the meantime, according to the official data 735,000 Tajik nationals traveled abroad last year seeking better employment opportunities, he noted, adding that women constituted 10-12 percent of them.

According to the data from the Agency for Statistics, Tajik labor migrants remitted 2.1 billion U.S. dollars to banks in Tajikistan over the first eleven months of 2010, which is 27 percent more than in the same period of 2009.
