Tajik Ambassador, Luxembourg PM discuss cooperation issues

DUSHANBE, May 11, 2011, Asia-PLus — Tajik Ambassador to Luxembourg Rustamjon Soliyev met with Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker on May 10 to discuss state and prospects of bilateral economic, investment, tourism and humanitarian cooperation between Tajikistan and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Tajik MFA information department reports.

In the course of the talks, Tajik diplomat briefed Luxembourg PM on achievements made by Tajikistan in political economic and social spheres over the years of independence.

Mr. Jean-Claude Juncker, for his part, noted that Tajikistan played an important role in providing regional stability in the Central Asian region and appreciated Tajikistan’s support for efforts of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, the source said.

Luxembourg, officially the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, is a landlocked country in Western Europe, bordering Belgium, France, and Germany.  Luxembourg has a population of over half a million people in an area of approximately 2,586 square kilometers.  A representative democracy with a constitutional monarch, it is ruled by a grand duke.  It is the world”s only remaining sovereign grand duchy. The country has a highly developed economy, with the world”s highest GDP per capita according to the IMF and WB.

Luxembourg is a member of the European Union, NATO, OECD, the United Nations, Benelux, and the Western European Union, reflecting the political consensus in favor of economic, political, and military integration.  The Western European Union (WEU) will be until June 2011 an international organization tasked with implementing the Modified Treaty of Brussels (1954), an amended version of the original 1948 Treaty of Brussels.  The WEU was established by seven Western European nations during the Cold War.
