DUSHANBE, July 21, 2012, Asia-Plus — Oxfam GB and the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CES) under the Government of Tajikistan have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on partnership in disaster risk reduction.
The Affiliate of “Oxfam GB” association in Tajikistan, and the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defence under the Government of Tajikistan took a step toward strengthening their working alliance on July 18 when they signed the MoU, press release issue by Oxfam GB in Tajikistan said.
The MoU is signed with the objective of mutual collaboration and support in delivery of the DIPECHO- 7 Project implemented by Oxfam GB in Tajikistan. In April 2012, Oxfam and the Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection signed an agreement (ECHO/DIP/BUD/2012/91004) on the implementation of the DIPECHO 7 project on Promoting community based Disaster Prevention and Disaster Risk Reduction practices in Tajikistan.
The allocated project funding for EUR 529, 412.46 for the duration of 15 months. This finding allocation aims to further institutionalize to the extent possible, the learning and best practices of DIIPECHO interventions to date.
The purpose of the MOU is to define roles and responsibilities of the Parties with a view to effective implementation of the OGB project titled “Promoting community based Disaster Preparedness and Disaster Risk Reduction practices in Tajikistan” funded by – European Commission of Humanitarian aid Office (ECHO), for benefit of people in Tajikistan.
The project objective and intended result is to improve the overall disaster preparedness of rural communities that have access to disaster education and thus to minimize the risk to life of substantial numbers of people living in disaster prone areas in Tajikistan.
The project is implemented by Oxfam. Oxfam works with others to overcome poverty and suffering. Oxfam GB is a member of Oxfam International.
The MoU between the Affiliate of “Oxfam GB” association in Tajikistan, and the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defence is expected to reinforce the ties of friendship and cooperation between the Government Institution and the Affiliate of the Association of Oxfam in Tajikistan in strengthening the capacities of the COES and CD at national, regional and district levels and enable them to reach and support vulnerable communities. Those changes will offer new possibilities for enhancing sustainability in disaster management practices in Tajikistan.
