Dushanbe. December 10. “Asia-Plus” — On December 9 Thomas Ochakoso, IOM and ILO’s International Consultant for Migration, met in Dushanbe with representatives of the local media and officials from the Tajik Ministry of Interior’s Migration Service.
Thomas Ochakoso, who worked for Labor Ministry of Philippines for a long time, answered questions about migration and migration policy based on rich experience of the given country and defined priority directions for the development of migration mechanisms, Migration Service told the AP.
According to Mr Ochakoso, migration process undergoes changes every year and requires close attention, study and additions. He pointed at the process of feminization in the nowadays labor migration stressing that more women become labor migrants. This is an aspect of special attention of the President of Philippines, governmental structures, various departments and institutes of civil society.
“most women who leave Philippines in search of job have higher education and good pre-migration professional and legal background,” he said. “Even if they work as housekeepers in such countries as Canada, United States or countries of Persian Gulf they must have higher education.”
Mr Ochakoso believes that feminization process requires deep examination and governmental support and development of national strategy on women migration and migration in general.
The consultant is confident that labor migration should become a priority direction in Tajikistan’s state policy since 50% of the country’s GDP is formed thanks to migrants’ remittances.
Mr Ochakoso recommends Tajik authorities to coordinate cooperation between all structures dealing with migration and development of migration policy.
Thomas Ochakoso arrived in Tajikistan on December 1 to provide practical and methodical assistance to the country. He was invited by the Tajik Interior Ministry’s Migration Service and will stay in Tajikistan till December 15th.
