DUSHANBE, April 6, 2010, Asia-Plus  — During his visit to Central Asia, the UN Secretary-General ban Ki-moon has called on Central Asia’s countries to come to an agreement on ways of economic cooperation and jointly seek solution to the problem of distribution of natural resources, first of all water, in the region, UN News Center reports.

Ban’s trip has focused on human rights and regional cooperation problem, including water issues in Central Asia.

We will recall that UN chief flew around the Aral Sea on April 4 in a helicopter to view the damage caused by inefficient and over use of water for irrigation.  Ban called it one of the worst environmental disasters of the world.

Mr. Ban said the Aral Sea disaster was a stark reminder of the importance of properly managing the environment and the Earth’s natural resources.  He emphasized the importance of resolving problems of cooperation and competition over natural resources in ways that benefit the entire region and respect the interests of all nations, according to the UN News Center.

The UN chief noted that care of the Aral Sea environment was a common task of both the countries of the region and other countries of the world.
