DUSHANBE, October 19, 2010, Asia-Plus — Minister of Finance Safarali Najmiddinov has asked the government to refrain from exempting individual entities from payment of taxes.
Najmiddinov remarked this on October 19 at an enlarged meeting of the government, presided over by Prime Minister Oqil Oqilov.
According to him, such measures may seriously affect replenishment of the country’s budget. “The Ministry of Economic Development and Trade offers to grant tax preferences to certain categories of taxpayers,” said Najmiddinov, “However, we have got evidence that this measure is inexpedient and asks to refrain from such suggestions in the future.”
The finance minister added that it was necessary to support individual enterprises and branches of economy, “but it is necessary to do this in a different way.” “It is necessary to support them through individual federally funded programs,” Najmiddinov said.
We will recall that in a report released at a news conference in Dushanbe, Nouriddin Mahmadov, the deputy head of the Customs Service under the Government of Tajikistan, revealed on October 18 that approximately 78 percent of Tajikistan’s imports have been exempted from payment of customs fees in January-September this year. In accordance with the country’s legislation, commodities intended for construction of strategic facilities and implementation of a number of projects and programs as well as goods purchased abroad due to loans and grants have been exempted from customs fees (customs duty, VAT and excise duty) over the first nine months of the year, Mahmadov said, adding that “part of technical equipment necessary for further development of Tajikistan’s economy” has also been exempted from payment of customs fees over the report period.
