CIS Executive Committee to send its observers to Tajikistan to monitor constitutional referendum

Asia-Plus

DUSHANBE, April 7, 2016, Asia-Plus – The CIS Executive Committee will send its observers to Tajikistan to monitor constitutional referendum that will take place next month.

An official source at Tajikistan’s Central Commission for Elections and Referenda (CCER) says the CIS Executive Committee Head Sergey Lebedev has sent an official notification to all the CIS member nations with solicitation to send their observers to Tajikistan.

We will recall that Tajikistan is to hold a referendum on May 22 on constitutional amendments that would enable incumbent President Emomali Rahmon to run for office an indefinite number of times.

Lawmakers in Tajikistan’s lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon) of parliament unanimously approved the date on February 10, after the Constitutional Court ruled that changes to the country”s constitution that would allow the president to run an indefinite number of times were legal.

The amendments adopted by lawmakers in January would also lower the required minimum age for presidents from 35 years to 30, enabling Rahmon”s eldest son, Rustam Emomali, to take part in a presidential election scheduled for 2020, when he will be 33.
