More than 130 Kyrgyzstani suffer from chronic kidney disease. Moreover, all of these patients are currently on a wait list for hemodialysis. The statement was voiced by the head nephrologist Rysbek Kaliev at the press-conference on 11 March, 2010.

He said the hemodialysis of 90 percent of patients is being paid from the state budget. They undergo a treatment in one of four dialysis department in Bishkek, Karakol and Osh city.

According to the National Cardiology and Therapy Center, there are 200 patients registered with chronic kidney disease in 2000, and 400 patients were registered in 2009. Most of them are citizens of northern parts of the republic, he underlined.

The doctors suggested that the increase of number of patients with kidney disease have been caused by the patients themselves. They do not consult with doctors and usually overuse antibiotics. The patients with chronic kidney disease needed an expensive replacement therapy – kidney transplantation or hemodialysis.

Reportedly, the kidney transplantation operation was provided for 27 patients. People must go abroad – Russia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and China – in order to get an operation over there. The cost of the operation makes up $30-60 thousand. Moreover, the patient with a transplanted kidney needs a lifelong therapy that in turn costs $1 thousand a month.
