US, British experts instruct Central Asian colleagues in countering drug trafficking

DUSHANBE, November 17, Asia-Plus – Experts from the United Stated and the Great Britain conducted a two-day training on fighting drug trafficking for representatives from the counternarcotics agencies of Central Asia’s states and Afghanistan in Tashkent from November 14 to November 15.

The First Deputy Tajik Drug Control (DCA) Director, Colonel Vaysiddin Azamatov, said that the training is of important significance, especially as against a background of increasing opium production in Afghanistan.  “The opium cultivation has increased in this country and according to international experts, 6,100 tons of opium have been produced in Afghanistan this year,” Azamatov stressed.

According to him, the main objective of the training was to acquaint its participants with goals, current activity and the strategy of implementation of the project, as well as discuss further cooperation.

“A protocol containing the training results will be published in media” the Tajik drug control official said, noting that the Tajik delegation participating in the seminar consisted of representatives from the ministries of defense, interior, state revenues and tax collections, border protection committee and the counternarcotics agency.

Azamatov noted that the training is part of the Russia-NATO pilot project.
