DUSHANBE, January 17, 2012, Asia-Plus — Eleven people were killed by natural disasters in Tajikistan last year, Abdusattor Khoushvakhtov, the first deputy head of the Committee for Emergency Situations and Civil Defense (CES), announced at a news conference in Dushanbe on January 17.
According to him, 120 natural disasters were reported in Tajikistan in 2011.
It is to be noted that 236 emergency situations were registered in the country in 2010 and 61 people were killed by disasters in 2010, making 2010 one of the deadliest years in the past twenty years.
“Last year’s disasters damaged 1,000 houses; 57 houses were destroyed completely,” said Khoushvakhtov. “A total damage caused by last year’s disasters has been estimated at some 43 million somoni.”
