Corruption in federally funded institutions reportedly costs Tajikistan at 102.5 million somoni

Findings of inspections conducted by the Accounts Chamber over the first nine months of this year have shown that corruption in federally funded institutions has cost Tajikistan at 102.5 million somoni (equivalent to more than 10.5 million U.S. dollars), according to the Accounts Chamber.

Over the report period, auditors of the Accounts Chamber have conducted 217 inspections in ministries, agencies, economic entities, project implementation units and other federally funded institutions, an official source within the Accounts Chamber told Asia-Plus in an interview.

Most facts reportedly concern embezzlement of stat funds, tax evasion, illegal expenses, unreasonable write-offs, and overstatement of repair and construction volumes.

The largest damage has reportedly been caused by the State Unitary Enterprise (SUE) Affordable Housing – 41.1 million somoni (equivalent to more than 4.2 million U.S. dollars).

The Accounts Chamber was reportedly established to tighten control of finances as well as conduct audit and assess the national budget.  The Accounts Chamber is accountable to the President and the Parliament.  The Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower house of parliament) elects chief auditors of the Chamber of Accounts upon the recommendation of the President; chief auditor may be elected to not more than two seven-year terms.
