Bordyuzha says NATO ignores proposals on cooperation with CSTO

DUSHANBE, April 14, 2015, Asia-Plus — NATO and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) face the same challenges and threats, CSTO Secretary-General Nikolai Bordyuzha told Russian news agency TASS in an interview on Monday, April 13.

However, NATO continues to ignore proposals for cooperation with counterparts from CSTO, the head of the Russia-led military alliance of former Soviet states, said.

“I believe we should have cooperation with NATO and resolve global security problems together.  It’s the best thing we can do,” CSTO Secretary-General Nikolai Bordyuzha told TASS, noting however that it was necessary not to interfere in the conflict in Ukraine.

The CSTO, which includes Russia and former Soviet republics of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, has repeatedly called on the West”s military alliance to establish contacts and deal together with problems concerning members of both organizations, Bordyuzha said.

“Unfortunately, NATO has another position.  They do not refuse to cooperate.  They just remain silent and do their job sending their instructors to Ukraine and lending moral – and not only moral – support,” he said.

Bordyuzha said he believed that so long as Ukraine is neither a member of NATO nor a CSTO member, there is no need for sending instructors, experts or other personnel to provide advice and training to Kiev soldiers.
