Tajik Defense Minister Sherali Mirzo on June 6 will participate in the next session of the CIS Council of Defense Ministers, Faridoun Mahmadalizoda, a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense (MoD) of Tajikistan, told Asia-Plus today morning.

24 issues have reportedly been tabled to the session’s agenda.  The CIS defense ministers are planned to discuss priorities of military and technical cooperation between the CIS member nations in 2018-2020, the upcoming international army games and the joint computer-assisted command and staff air-defense drill, dubbed Regional Security 2018, etc.

The meeting participants will also discuss issues related to conducting a command and staff aid-defense drill, dubbed Clean Sky 2018, cooperation in using unmanned aerial vehicles and expansion of cooperation in the field of hydrometeorology and the common system of radar identification.

The CIS defense ministers will also discuss draft agreements on unified military communications system, use of military satellites and further improvement of them, cooperation on exchange of geospace information, according to Mahmadalizoda.

Meanwhile, media outlets of other CIS member nations say a session of the CIS Council of Defense Ministers is being held in Kyzyl, the capital of Russia’s Tuva Republic, on June 5-7.

Belarusian news agency BelTA says the International Army Games 2018 are scheduled to take place in six countries on 28 July – 11 August. The Games will feature 27 events.  The Belarusian army intends to take part in 15 events, including Sniper Frontier, Community Warrior, Tank Biathlon, Suvorov Attack, and Aviadarts.  The Sniper Frontier event is scheduled to take place in the exercise area of the 38th Independent Airborne Brigade near Brest on 28 July – 11 August.

Established on December 1991 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) is a regional organization.  It now consists of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Ukraine.  Georgia pulled out of the organization in 2009.

In 1992, the CIS Charter establishes the Council of Ministers of Defense, which is vested with the task of coordinating military cooperation of the CIS member states.  To this end, the Council develops conceptual approaches to the questions of military and defense policy of the CIS member states; develops proposals aimed to prevent armed conflicts on the territory of the member states or with their participation; gives expert opinions on draft treaties and agreements related to the questions of defense and military developments; issues related suggestions and proposals to the attention of the CIS Council of the Heads of State.  Also important is the Council’s work on approximation of the legal acts in the area of defense and military development.
