Tajik FM to attend NATO summit in Romania

DUSHANBE, April 1, Asia-Plus  — Tajik Foreign Minister Hamrokhon Zarifi today left for Bucharest, Romania to attend the 20th NATO that will be held there from April 2-4, according to Tajik MFA.   

Davlat Nazri, the head of the MFA information department, said that Zarifi, in particular,  will participate in a meeting of countries participating in the NATO “Partnership for Peace” Program, which is scheduled to be held on April 4.  The meeting is supposed to discuss issues related to independence of Kosovo and the present situation in Afghanistan, the MFA spokesman said.    

Partnership for Peace is a NATO project aimed at creating trust between NATO and other states in Europe and the former Soviet Union; 23 nations are members.  The program was created in 1994, soon after the collapse of the former eastern bloc.   

 In the meantime, according to information posted on NATO’s, the three-day Summit will include meetings at NATO’s highest level in different formats such as the North Atlantic Council (NAC), the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council (EAPC), the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) and the NATO-Ukraine Commission (NUC).  The summit will conclude on April 4 with the meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Commission, followed by the NATO-Russia Council, which will include the participation of President Putin.
