Crime rate reducing in Panjakent, says local prosecutor

PANJAKENT, July 2, 2008, Asia-Plus  — Over the first six months of this year, 112 crimes have been registered in the city of Panjakent (Sughd province), which is 63 cases fewer than in the same period of last year, the Panjakent prosecutor Rustam Azimov said.

According to him, this has become possible due to strengthening of public prosecutor’s supervision and additional measures introduced by the local law enforcement agencies to prevent crime.

The prosecutor noted that the number of grave crimes had reduced by 15 cases, thefts by 11 cases, fraud by 13 cases, and economic crimes by 26 cases.

Only two crimes committed by minors have been registered in the city over the same six-month period, while in January-June 2007, 23 such crimes were registered in Panjakent, Azimov said.

The crime detection rate for January-June stood at 94.7 percent.

Azimov added that that fight against drug trafficking had also been strengthened.  Over the report period, 15 criminal proceedings have been instituted in Panjakent on drug-trafficking charges, which is 9 cases more than in January-June 2007, the prosecutor said.
