UN secretary-general calls on Putin to ‘give peace a chance’

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on February 23 called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop Russian troops from attacking Ukraine, and give peace a chance.

Mr. Guterres made the remarks at an emergency UN Security Council session over the Ukraine-Russia crisis.

The United Nations Security Council convened for its second meeting in three days over the Ukraine-Russia crisis.

Washington Examiner says U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres admitted that he had been wrong to believe that "nothing serious would happen" and called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to embrace peace.

During an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council, Guterres said even as there were "rumors and indications" today that gave the impression that Russia was preparing to attack Ukraine, he was convinced of the opposite and called for Putin to "give peace a chance."

"If indeed an operation is being prepared, I have only one thing to say from the bottom of my heart," Guterres said. "President Putin, stop your troops from attacking Ukraine."
