KHOROG, June 8, 2009, Asia-Plus  – Some 160 participants in various training courses and programs of the Khorog campus of the School of Professional and Education (SPCE) of the University of Central Asia (UCA) have been given certificates.

Speaking in an interview with Asia-Plus, the head of the SPCE campus in Khorog, Dilovar Butabekov, said that the certificate-handing ceremony was held in the building of Khorog State University on June 6 and 24 students were given certificates on accounting technology, 75 students were given certificates on the 2nd and 3rd levels of the Business English program, and others were given certificates on taking training courses on guides and tour operators in mountain areas as well as Microsoft Windows Server 2003 management.

According to him, several Afghan nationals that successfully taken training courses at the SPCE campus in Khorog were also given certificates.  According to him, more than 60 other students are being given the SPCE certificates in Dushanbe today.

There are few opportunities outside secondary and higher education systems in Central Asia for adults to learn new skills or enhance existing skills for professional and personal development.  However, the transitioning economies of the region need such opportunities to build and improve skills in all sectors; opportunities that can be accessed by learners who are not necessarily enrolled in high school or university systems.

UCA’s School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPCE) is Central Asia’s first provider of formal, university-based, non-degree educational programs, offering vocational, professional development and personal improvement opportunities to youth and adults.

Established in 2006, SPCE is UCA’s first operational academic program, and has the mission of fostering economic development. It does this by responding to trends and needs in the local economies of the communities in which it operates and offering courses that improve employment and income generating opportunities for youth and adults, and professional development opportunities for mid-career professionals.  By building vocational skills and professional competencies, SPCE will encourage entrepreneurship in the region and stimulate economic development.
