DUSHANBE, November 17, 2001, Asia-Plus — The Majlisi Milli (Tajikistan’s upper chamber of parliament) Speaker Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev met with the Inter-parliamentary Union British Group Secretary General Kenneth Courtney in London on November 15, according to Shavkat Said, an aid to the Majlisi Milli speaker.
The sides discussed issues related to expansion of inter-parliamentary cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Kingdom.
The same day, Ubaidulloyev met with the Lord Speaker, Baroness Hayman. “Along with expansion of bilateral economic cooperation between Great Britain and Tajikistan, including cooperation in energy and agrarian sectors, the sides also discussed cooperation between the two countries in promoting establishment of peace and stability in Afghanistan,” the aide said.
According to him, Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloyev invited Baroness Hayman to pay an official visit to Dushanbe.
Further expansion of inter-parliamentary cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Kingdom figured in Tajik speaker’s discussions with Chairman of All-Party Parliamentary Group Lord Viscount Waverley, Lord Andreson and Deputy the House of Commons Nigel Evans.
We will recall that a Tajik parliamentary delegation, led by Ubaidulloyev is currently on a visit to the United Kingdom at invitation of the speakers of both houses of British Parliament.
The Tajik delegation members include representatives of the Majlisi Milli Nouriddin Saidov, Zarrina Rajabova, Qobilamo Ghulomshoyeva and representatives of the Majlsi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) Rustam Latipov and Mahmadsharif Nozimov. The delegation left for London on November 14 and the visit will last until November 20.
