Tajikistan’s external trade exceeds US$3 bln turnover in Jan-Oct 2010

DUSHANBE, November 17, 2010, Asia-Plus  — Over the first ten months of this year, the external trade turnover of Tajikistan, including electrical power and natural gas, has amounted to 3.0127 billion U.S. dollars, which was 105 percent of the January-October 2009 level or 142.7 million U.S. dollars more, according to the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan.

The trade balance was negative and amounted to more than 1.1358 billion US dollars.

Exports of goods in January-October 2010 amounted to 938.4 million US dollars, which was 16.5 percent, or 132.8 million U.S. dollars, more than in the same period last year.

Imports of goods into the country over the report period amounted to 2.0742 billion U.S. dollars, which was 0.5 percent, or 9.9 million dollars, more than in January-October 2009.

Compared to September 2010, exports and imports increased last month by 36.9 and 3.9 percent respectively.

In January-October 2010, Tajikistan had trade relations with 100 countries of the world, including 10 CIS nations.

Over the report, period the CIS countries accounted for 44.2 percent (1.332 billion dollars) of Tajikistan’s external trade turnover and the far abroad countries accounted for 55.8 percent (1.6807 billion dollars) of the country’s external trade turnover.

Electrical power accounted for 0.5 percent of Tajikistan’s external trade turnover in the report period.  In January-October this year, Tajikistan exported 153.4 million kWh of electricity for 2.9199 million U.S. dollars.  Over the same period, Tajikistan imported 310.5 million kWh of electrical power for 11.7922 million U.S. dollars.

Over the same ten-month period, Tajikistan has imported 132.9 million cubic meters of natural gas from Uzbekistan for 31.3 million U.S. dollars.

Share of cotton fiber accounted for 13.8 percent of Tajikistan’s exports in January-October 2010.  Over the report period, Tajikistan exported 75,000 tons of cotton fiber for 129.7 million U.S. dollars, which is 11,100 tons and 60.9 million U.S. dollars more than in the same period last year.

The main trading partners of Tajikistan in regard to its cotton were: Turkey – 27.8; Russia – 25.8 percent; Iran – 20.4 percent; Latvia – 8.3 percent; Pakistan – 8.0 percent; Ukraine – 5.2 percent; Moldova – 1.7 percent; Uzbekistan – 1.2 percent; Belarus – 0.9 percent; and Kazakhstan – 0.7 percent.   

Compared to January-October 2009, an average price of one ton of cotton fiber increased by US$654 and amounted to US$1,730.
