DUSHANE, December 14, 2012, Asia-Plus — Thirty-five members of a cross border working group representing local authorities and law enforcement agencies from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan met on December 12 to share experience and knowledge in improving trans-border cooperation between communities living by both sides of the border, press release issued by the European Union Delegation to Tajikistan said.

During the meeting, local authorities of Sughd province of Tajikistan and Batken province of Kyrgyzstan reportedly discussed the results of implementation of 2012 Working Plan, acknowledged its successful implementation in current year and approved the Action Plan for strengthening trans-border cooperation for the next 5 years.  The meeting provided participants with opportunities to discuss specific issues of cross-border cooperation.

On December 11, representatives of local authorities and law-enforcement agencies from Isfara city and district of Batken province had a one-day training session in Isfara, Tajikistan on improvement of trans-border cooperation between border communities of these two regions.

It is expected that both events, arranged by the EU-UNDP Border Management in Central Asia (BOMCA)

Program together with UNDP Program on Integrated development of the territory of Batken province, will contribute to strengthening cross-border cooperation and understanding between Tajik and Kyrgyz local communities.

The overall objectives of BOMCA are to help increase security in the Central Asian region, to contribute toward the facilitation of legitimate trade and transit, and to reduce the illicit movement of goods and people.

BOMCA is funded by the European Union and implemented by the UNDP.
