DUSHANBE, December 26, 2012, Asia-Plus  — Russian export company, Altai Flour Mills Co., Ltd., has begun supplying enriched flour to Tajikistan.

According to information posted on the company’s official website, shipment of more than 2,000 tons of wheat flour will be completed in January next year.

The flour will be delivered to Dushanbe and Khujand, the capital of Sughd province and it will be distributed under programs implemented in Tajikistan by the UN World Food Program (WFP).

Enriched flour is flour with specific nutrients returned to it that have been lost while being prepared. These restored nutrients include iron and B vitamins (folic acid, riboflavin, niacin, and thiamine).  Calcium may also be supplemented.  The purpose of enriching flour is to replenish the nutrients in the flour to match the nutritional status of the unrefined product.  This differentiates enrichment from fortification, which is the process of introducing new nutrients to a food.

Founded in 2008, Altai Flour Mills Co., Ltd. aims to provide consolidated promotion of products of the major Altai grain processing companies at international markets.

The Altai region is one of the leading agrarian regions of Russia.  Due to high volumes and quality of grown wheat, the region has become the leader in the field of grain processing.  Altai enterprises produce 13% of the Russian flour output, 25% of the Russian cereals output and 10% of the Russian macaroni output.
