CPT nominates Istaravshan mayor to run for seat in parliament

DUSHANBE, January 13, 2015, Asia-Plus — The Communist Party of Tajikistan (CPT) has nominated Ibrohim Abdullozoda, the Mayor of Istaravshan (Sughd province), to run for seat in Tajikistan’s lower house (Majlisi Namoyandagon).

CPT leader Shodi Shabdolov says that Ibrohim Abdullozoda is the only member of the CPT who holds such a high post.

Abdullozoda will run for election to the parliament in the Istaravshan single-mandate constituency, Shabdolov noted.

In the Istaravshan constituency, Abdullozoda will compete for seat in the parliament with Zufar Ismoilzoda, the head of the Ghonchi district (Sughd province), who has been nominated by the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Meanwhile, the PDP has also nominated Ms. Glunora Boboyeva, the chairperson of the of the education and science department of President’s Executive Office, to run for seat in the Majlisi Namoyandagon.  She will run for election to the parliament in the Ismoili Somoni constituency (Dushanbe).

Tajikistan’s Parliament (Majlisi Oli) has two chambers: the Assembly of Representatives (Majlisi Namoyandagon) and the National Assembly (Majlisi Milli).  Majlisi Namoyandagon has 63 members, elected for a five-year term in, 22 by proportional representation and 41 in single-seat constituencies.  Majlisi Milli has 33 members, 25 elected for a five-year term by local legislature (majlis) members and eight appointed by the president.
