Public association “Khoma” completes a series of trainings within education program on “Data Journalism” under the media component of the “Support to public finance management” project supported by Department for International Development UK (DFID) and Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation – Tajikistan (OSI/AF-Tajikistan).
The final training on “Data Visualization to Engage Citizen” will be conducted for the project participants from October 24-28. Within the framework of training program, participants will learn more details on quality and literate visualization of issues relevant to budget and public finances, using a variety of online platforms, such as: OpenSpending.org, OpenRefine, RAW, plot.ly, quadrigram.com, QGIS, Tableau, Adobe Illustrator and others.
According to Khoma, more attention will be paid on, how to visually attract the audients to the important issues of public finances and budgeting, creating simple visualizations, facilitating the perception of complicated economic issues through infographics, diagrams, interactive maps and other available tools of data journalism.
Participants also will continue broaden their financial knowledge by studying draft budget of Tajikistan for 2017 and comparing it with the previous budgets. They will continue improving their knowledge and skills in data clearing and use of sector specific budget indicators using of Excel sheets.
Trainers from Tajikistan and Russia will describe and provide practical classes on searching for information from available open online resources, its processing, filtration as well as sorting and interactive visualization.
The editor of infographic studio of IIA “Russia Today” Aleksandr Bogachev will show participants the best examples of visualization of budget indicators and help them to create interactive maps in the CartoDB and GeoCoding programs. He will present how to use geo-data mapping tools as of QGIS and Tableu, as well as other online and offline services. A separate session will be dedicated on graphic design, style, typography and compositions. An interesting session is waiting participants on individual work to create video-graphics.
Participants with the help of trainers will consolidate gained knowledge through practical and independent work on application of variety of tools for visualization. On the first day of training, participants will be divided into creative groups to prepare the final projects by the end of trainings.
The project aimed to improve public finance management, efficiency, accountability and transparency of state budget, and also facilitate financial literacy of the population through promoting of economic journalism.
