Tajik President Emomali Rahmon today met in the Armenian capital, Yerevan, with Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan.
According to the Tajik president’s official website, the two sides discussed state and prospects of further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Armenia.
Emomali Rahmon, in particular, noted that Tajikistan was interested in expanding bilateral cooperation with Armenia and stated that he was optimistic over further prospects for Tajikistan-Armenia relations.
Both sides reportedly noted that the Tajik-Armenian commission for trade and economic cooperation could play a positive role in bringing relations between Dushanbe and Yerevan to a qualitatively new level.
Sectors like textile industry, precious stone and metal processing, jewelry production and tourism were outlined as areas that could drive the bilateral trade between the two countries.
According to data of the Agency for Statistics under the President of Tajikistan, a two-way trade between Tajikistan and Armenia last year valued at little more than 269,000 U.S. dollars. This consisted of Tajikistan’s exports to Armenia estimated at little more than 264,000 U.S. dollars and Tajikistan’s imports from Armenia worth 5,000 U.S. dollars.
Diplomatic relations between Tajikistan and Armenia were established on October 12, 1992. To-date, legal foundation of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Armenia has included more than 30 documents.
