Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Tajikistan, Nurlan Seitimov, has met with Tajik Minister of Agriculture, Sattor Izzatullo, this week to discuss issues related to bilateral cooperation between Kazakhstan and Tajikistan in the field of agriculture and ratification of the Statute of the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), according to the Kazakh Embassy in Dushanbe.

In the course of the talks, Seitimov and Izzatullo reportedly discussed ways of expansion of mutual delivery of farm produce and agricultural equipment.

Both sides expressed interest in expansion of cooperation in the field of seed farming and cattle breeding.  They also discussed delivery of elite potato seeds, genetic material and breeding stock to Tajikistan.

Kazakh diplomat reportedly expressed hope that Tajikistan will ratify the IOFS Statute in the near future.

Headquartered in Astana, IOFS is the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) specialized institution for food security.  It provides expertise and technical know-how to member states on the various aspects of sustainable agriculture, rural development, food security, and biotechnology including addressing the problems posed by desertification, deforestation, erosion and salinity as well as providing social safety nets.

The Islamic Organization for Food Security of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (IOFS) held the Inaugural Session of its General Assembly in the Kazakh capital, Astana, on April 28, 2016.

During the opening ceremony, Kazakhstan was elected Chairman of the General Assembly while Côte d’Ivoire and Palestine were elected vice-chairmen.

The General Assembly elected the 8-member Executive Board of the IOFS as well as appointed Director General of IOFS Secretariat.  In addition, the General Assembly approved a 5-year Plan of Action of the Organization that seeks to implement quick-win programs, aimed at fast-tracking exchanges and cooperation among IOFS Member States.  The General Assembly also adopted IOFS's budget, together with its Rules of Procedure, Financial Regulations, and Personnel Regulations.
