Tajikistan’s upper house (Majlisi Milli) of parliament yesterday seconded an initiative of deputies of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament) to give law enforcement authorities the power to identify people suspected of visiting “undesirable” websites.
Speaking on this subject, Majlisi Milli member Ozoda Rahmon suggested that relevant amendments should made to the country’s law on operational and search activities.
Recall, one deputy of the lower house, Jourakhon Majidzoda, suggested on June 7 that criminal investigators should be given the power to identify people suspected of visiting “undesirable” websites.
In support of his argument, MP Majidzoda claimed that people across Tajikistan are collectively being bombarded with up to 90,000 SMS messages every day from supposed extremists and terrorists.
According to him, the messages include appeals to join forces with radical groups based abroad.
The parliamentarian also claimed that out of more than 3 million Tajiks who now have access to the Internet, more than 80 percent visit websites containing extremist and terrorist content.
