The mass of slurry blocking the Panj River in GBAO’s Darvoz district destroyed by explosives

The mass of slurry blocking the Panj River in the Darvoz district of the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous region  has been destroyed with the use of hand-placed explosives.

Russian servicemen have used more than 100 kilograms of TNT to destroy the muss slurry that blocked the Panj River in GBAO’s Darvoz district, according to the press center of Russia’s Central Military District.

Colonel Yaroslav Roshchupkin, an aide to the commander of Russia's Central Military District, says the Central Military District command has received an appropriate appeal from Tajikistan’s authorities.

According to him, several mudflows that occurred on the Afghan bank of the Panj River on June 8 carried the mass of slurry with them, blocking the river.

The dam that suddenly appeared in the river increased the water level by several meters.  As a result, the river flooded the Dushanbe-Khorog highway in two places, Roshchupkin said.

The mudflows reportedly damaged dozens of houses on both sides of the Tajik-Afghan border and blocked the section of the Dushanbe-Khorog highway between the villages of Shirgovad and Yoged.  The work on repairing the highway is under way.

The mudflows left several people dead in Afghan Darvaz, according to the press center of Russia’s Military Central District.
