Resident of Sughd jailed for propagation of IS ideas

Asia-Plus

A “radicalized” resident of the northern province of Sughd has got a lengthy jail term for propagation of ideas of the so-called Islamic State (IS) terror group.

A court in the Bobojonghafourov district sentenced the 28-year-old resident of the Unji jamoat, Abubakr Boymatov, to eight years in prison on July 18.  The sentence followed his conviction on charges of organizing activities of an extremist group (Article 307 of Tajikistan’s Penal Code).  Boymatov will serve his term in a high-security penal colony.

Judge Boirjon Zoirzoda, who presided over the trial, says Boymatov was propagating IS ideas among four residents of Khujand and Bobojonghafourov district who were engaged in repairing apartments in Dushanbe.

“He proposed them to travel to Syria to join IS militants,” the judge said, noting that Boymatov was arrested by security officers in April this year.
