Development of CASA -1000 community support program discussed in Dushanbe

Date:

Issues related to cooperation between Tajikistan and the World Bank within the frameworks of the Central Asia-South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade (CASA-1000) Project were discussed here on August 2 at a meeting of the Frist Deputy Finance Minister, Mr. Jamshed Karimzoda, with the World Bank Country Manager for Tajikistan, Mr. Jan-Peter Olters, according to the Ministry of Finance (MoF) Secretariat.

The two reportedly discussed development of the CASA-1000 Community Support Program (CSP).  A special attention was paid to the issues of financing and implementation of the community support program, including the fund flow mechanism.

Both sides underlined the significance of implementation of that program for improvement of communities’ access to electricity or other social and economic infrastructure services as well as strengthening of potentials of local governments in the project area, the Secretariat said.

The Central Asia-South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project aims to facilitate electricity trade between hydropower surplus countries in Central Asia and electricity deficient countries in South Asia by putting in place the commercial and institutional arrangements and the transmission infrastructure required for this trade. The CASA-1000 will cover the countries Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan and Tajikistan.

As part of the CASA-1000 project, the participating countries will implement individual Community Support Programs (CSPs) in each country.  The objective of these programs is in increasing the shared prosperity associated with the project for communities along the CASA-1000 corridor.
