Belarusian MPs visit Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament

Asia-Plus

A group of Belarusian parliamentarians has visited the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Tajikistan’s lower chamber of parliament).

Tajik MP Nourullo Oqilzoda, the head of the Tajikistan/Belarus Parliamentary Friendship Group, briefed Belarusian parliamentarians on Tajikistan’s parliamentary system and reaffirm Tajik parliament’s readiness to expand cooperation with the parliament of Belarus, Muhammadato Sultonov, a spokesman for the Majlisi Namoyandagon, told Asia-Plus in an interview.

Belarusian MPs, for their part, showed interest in studying their Tajik colleagues’ experience in legislation and establishment of international cooperation, Sultonov said.

Tajik-Belarusian relations are reportedly based on principles of mutual confidence, close cooperation and concurrence in or similarity of positions on many regional and international issues.

The legal foundation of bilateral cooperation between Tajikistan and Belarus includes more than 60 documents.

The National Assembly of Belarus is the bicameral parliament that governs Belarus.  The two chambers of the National Assembly are: Council of the Republic (the upper house) and House of Representatives (the lower house).  While each chamber has specific duties, both chambers have the ability to veto the decrees of local administrations that deviate from the Constitution of Belarus.

The chambers of the Belarusian National Assembly are convened to two regular sessions every year: the first session opens on October 2 and its duration cannot be more than 80 days; the second session opens on April 2 and does not last more than 90 days.
