A survey released by the Center for Strategic Studies under the President of Tajikistan says contribution of Tajik labor migrants to Russia’s GDP last year amounted to 1.2 percent.
Last year’s gross domestic product (GDP) of the Russian Federation has been estimated at nearly one trillion Russian dollars (equivalent to more than 17 billion U.S. dollars).
Meanwhile, an average monthly wage of migrant workers is reportedly 20-25 percent lower compared to an average monthly nominal wage of Russian nationals.
Experts of Tajik think tank notes that the findings of the survey could be used by government bodies of Tajikistan and Russia for formation of migration policy and preparation of proposals on further improvement of mechanisms of integration within the CIS area.
The survey’s findings were made public at the seminar entitled “Impact of International Labor Migration on Socioeconomic Development of Russia” that took place in Dushanbe at the end of last week.
Last year, Tajik labor migrants working in the Russian Federation remitted some 2 billion U.S. dollars to banks in Tajikistan, which is nearly one-third of the country’s GDP for 2016.
Labor migrants are still a critical component in the economy of Tajikistan. Labor migrants’ remittances keep many struggling families at home above the poverty line.
