A delegation of the People’s Democratic Party of Tajikistan (PDPT), which is the ruling party of the country, led by the party deputy head, Ms. Rano, Bobojoniyon, will visit the Russian Federation in the coming days, Usmon Soleh, the head of the PDPT public relations department, told Asia-Plus in an interview.
According to him, the main purpose of the visit is for the delegation to get acquainted with problems facing Tajik labor migrants living and working there.
During a five-day visit, twelve representatives of the PDPT will visit Moscow, St. Petersburg and Yekaterinburg to hold meetings with Tajik labor migrants working in those cities.
During the meetings, the PDPT representatives will also inform Tajik labor migrants about real goals of international terrorist organizations, Soleh added.
Tajikistan is one the most migration-dependent economies in the world and radical recruiters have targeted Tajik labor migrants working in the Russian Federation. Often spending their late-adolescence away from their family home, labor migrants from Tajikistan and other Central Asian nations are subject to daily economic hardship, racial abuse and state harassment. According to some international experts, over 80% of the known Tajik ISIS fighters, for example, were recruited while working as labor migrants in Russia.
Founded in 1994, the People’s Democratic Party is the largest political party in Tajikistan, boasting more than 480,000 registered members. President Emomali Rahmon is chairman of the party. According to the PDP Central Committee, youth make 40 percent of the party members.
At the legislative elections, February 27 and March 13, 2005, the party won 74% of the popular vote and 52 out of 63 seats (74 percent of the popular vote). This was an increase from the 2000 elections, in which they won 64.9% of the vote and 38 seats. At the legislative elections, February 28, 2010, the party won 71.69% of the popular vote and 45 out of 63 seats.
At the last legislative election, March 1, 2015, the PDP won 65.4 percent of the vote and 51 out of 63 seats.
