Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has congratulated Tajik President Emomali Rahmon on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
In his message of congratulations that was released by the Uzbek Embassy in Dushanbe, Mirziyoyev, in particular, noted that the countries had managed to get significant results in expansion of many-sided cooperation in the short term.
Uzbek president says his recent meetings with Emomali Rahmon have given a new impulse to further expansion of bilateral cooperation between Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.
“We in Uzbekistan are open for further deepening of bilateral practical partnership in all spheres and ready to give our relations new qualitatively new character and give specific practical content to them,” Mirziyoyev noted.
Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Tajikistan and the Republic of Uzbekistan were established on October 22, 1992. The Embassy of the Republic of Tajikistan in Tashkent has functioned since 1995.
The legal foundation of bilateral Tajikistan-Uzbekistan relations includes 111 contracts and agreements signed at the interstate, intergovernmental and interdepartmental levels in the period from 1992 to the present.
Signs of a thaw in relations between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan emerged in September last year. In the years since independence, bilateral relations have been plagued by mistrust, disputes over water resources and outright hostility. Both sides have adopted a series of punitive measures against each other. President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has expressed interest in “resetting” relations with Tajikistan.
Regular flights between Dushanbe and Tashkent that were suspended in 1992 at Uzbek authorities’ initiative were resumed in April this year. The major trade fair of Uzbekistan’s exports, including auto, was held in Dushanbe in April and the exhibition of Tajikistan’s industrial goods took place in Tashkent this month.
