The National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT)’s office in the Sughd province says currency exchange points will begin to operate along Tajikistan’s common border with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan in the near future.
CA-NEWS, citing the head of the NBT office in Sughd, Navrouz Valiyev, says currency-exchange points of lending agencies will operate next to the border crossing points (BCPs).
“Because of lack of currency exchange points along the border, nationals of neighboring countries are forced to exchange currency in black market,” said Valiyev. “It is hard to exchange currency even in Khujand on Saturdays and Sundays when lending agencies do not work.”
According to him, the lending agencies are ordered to extend operation time of their currency-exchange points till 10:00 – 11:00 pm.
In Khujand and other cities of the province the currency-exchange points will operate twenty-four hours, according to Valiyev.
Recall, Tajikistan’s central bank in April 2015 ordered closure of private currency-exchange points. As a result of the blanket ban on private exchange offices more than half of the country’s exchange offices – 818 out of a total 1,581 – were shuttered, leaving 763 operating. The majority of the shuttered private exchange points were later reregistered to lending agencies.
