Japan’s Government completes five GGP projects in Khatlon province

From February 20 through 22, Mr. Tomohiro Nakagaki, Deputy Chief of Mission, the Embassy of Japan in Dushanbe, visited Khatlon province with a purpose of attending 5 handover ceremonies of the projects supported under the framework of Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

According to Japan’s Embassy, the first day of the trip was marked by celebrations of two handover ceremonies.  The first handover ceremony for “The Project for Renovation of School No 8 in Mehnatobod Village, Ghallaobod Jamoat, Khuroson District” was held on February 20, with the participation of Mr. Rahmatullo Safarzoda, Chairperson of Khuroson district.  The total grant amount of USD 82,154 was provided to the local authority of Khuroson district from the Government of Japan aiming at renovating the school No 8 and creating better learning environment for students.

The second occasion of was dedicated to successful implementation and handover ceremony of “The Project for Provision of Equipment and Construction of Support Center for Women in Qurghon Teppa City.”  Grant amounted to USD 82,260 was given to NGO “Dilafrouz” for equipping and construction of women support center in Qurghon Teppa City.  Along with Ms. Rayhongul Haqberdiyeva, Director of NGO “Dilafrouz”, representatives of local executive authority, local women and activists took part at the event.

On February 21, Mr. Nakagaki visited Qubodiyon district and together with Mr. Zafar Fayzullozoda, chairperson of Qubodiyon district participated in the handover ceremony of “The Project for Improvement of Drinking Water System in Qubodiyon District.”  Grant amount of USD 84,216 was allocated to the local authority of Qubodiyon district with the purpose of renovating pump stations and water pipeline system for provision of drinking water to dwellers of Qubodiyon town.

Following that day, Mr. Nakagaki and Mr. Abdualim Ismoilzoda, Chairperson of Shahritous district attended the handover ceremony of “The Project for the Rehabilitation of Existing School Building and the Construction of New Buildings for School No.29 in Vatan Village, Obshorom Jamoat, Shahritous District.” Having received grant amounted in USD 84,868 Hukumat of Shahritous district successfully implemented the project providing students with better school facilities.

On the last day of the business trip, Mr. Nakagaki together with Mr. Foteh Aminzoda, Chairperson of Jayhoun District, and many local people celebrated successful completion of “The Project for the Reconstruction of Two Bridges in Yakkadin Jamoat, Jayhoun District”.  As the bridges play important role in local infrastructure, the Government of Japan granted USD 84,355 to the local authority of Jayhoun district for the renovation.  

During the handover ceremonies, Mr. Nakagaki emphasized that Japan’s GGP projects aims to provide support in order to improve lives of the people of Tajikistan.  He mentioned that GGP projects have been implemented in various areas of basic human needs and public service throughout Tajikistan.  The Chairpersons recognized the importance of the projects and expressed gratitude for Japan’s support for their districts’ development.

Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) is a scheme within Japan’s Official Development Assistance. GGP in particular implements grassroots-level projects in various sectors throughout the Republic of Tajikistan.  Recipients of GGP grants include local governments, educational and medical institutions, and NGOs.  As of today, GGP has supported 387 projects in the Republic of Tajikistan, for which US$ $31.3 million has been allocated since 1996.
