Tajik nationals have been prohibited from transferring money to citizens of foreign countries abroad, even if they are their relatives.
The National Bank of Tajikistan (NBT) adopted an appropriate decision on this subject in early March. This decision has engendered certain problems for citizens of the country.
Thus, Tajik national Tatiana Ivanova has failed to transfer money to her relatives in Ukraine. All commercial banks have refused to transfer her money to Ukraine, saying that they have received instruction from the NBT prohibiting them from receiving remittances from Tajik nationals intended for citizens of other countries.
The National Bank of Tajikistan in early March made amendments to its regulations on the procedure of carrying out money transfer transactions by physical entities without opening bank accounts.
Physical entities now may transfer amounts equivalent to up 87,500 somoni against the previous 28,000 somoni.
Besides, Tajik nationals are now prohibited from transferring money to foreign citizens abroad.
Tajik central bank has justified its decision to prohibit Tajik nationals from transferring money to foreign citizens abroad by saying that it is aimed at countering the financing of terrorism.
Local experts, however, consider that these measures will not have the necessary effect. According to them, sponsors of terrorists, if they really exist in our country, could use modern electronic technologies and remain unidentified.
