The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide a grant aid to Tajikistan for implementation of the disaster risk management project, according to the Ministry of Finance (MoF) Secretariat.
Issues related to development of the national disaster risk management project were discussed here on May 16 at a meeting of Finance Minister Faiziddin Qahhorzoda with representatives of the ADB, the Secretariat said, noting the ADB would award grant to Tajikistan for implementation of this project.
“The project aims to promote strengthening of institutional potential of ministries and line agencies in responding to natural disasters such as earthquakes, landslides, mudflows and avalanches in order to minimize human casualties as well as property and socio-economic losses,” the Secretariat stressed.
The implementation of the project is expected to start at the beginning of the next year.
Meanwhile, the ADB Tajikistan country operations business plan (COBP) for 2017–2019 includes the project, Capacity Building for the Committee on Emergency Situations of Tajikistan. A total cost of the project is 120 million U.S. dollars. The ADB plans to provide some 105 million U.S. dollars in a form of preferential loan and more than 2 million U.S. dollars in a form of rant. Tajik government’s contribution to the project amounts to 15.7 million U.S. dollars.
ADB is celebrating 20 years of development partnership with Tajikistan in 2018. To date, ADB has reportedly approved around $1.6 billion in concessional loans, grants, and technical assistance to the country. ADB and Tajikistan’s development partnership, which began in 1998, has restored and built the country’s new transport and energy infrastructure, supported social development, expanded agricultural production, and improved regional cooperation and trade.
