Dilshod Nazarov wins first Tajikistan’s medal at Asian Summer Games in Jakarta

Tajikistan’s Rio Olympic champion Dilshod Nazarov has grabbed silver medal, finishing second in the hammer throw at the Asiad-2018.  

Dilshod Nazarov threw the hammer to a distance of 74.16 meters, according to the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Tajikistan.

It is the first medal for Tajikistan at the Asian Sumer Games 2018.  

A 23-year-old athlete from Qatar, Ashraf Elseify, won the gold medal at the Asiad 2018.  In his fifth attempt, Elseify threw the hammer to a distance of 76.88 meters. 

Suhrob Khojayev from Uzbekistan claimed bronze with a seasonal best throw of 74.06 meters.  

This year, Tajik athletes are participating in the Asian Summer Games for the seventh time.  In the previous six Asiads, Tajik athletes won totaling 21 meads, including 4 gold, 3 silver and 14 bronze medals.  

The Asian Games, also known as Asiad, is a continental multi-sport event held every four years among athletes from all over Asia.  The Games were regulated by the Asian Games Federation (AGF) from the first Games in New Delhi, India, until the 1978 Games.  Since the 1982 Games, they have been organized by the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), after the breakup of the Asian Games Federation.  The Games are recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and are described as the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.

In its history, nine nations have hosted the Asian Games. Forty-six nations have participated in the Games, including Israel, which was excluded from the Games after their last participation in 1974.

The most recent games were held in Incheon, South Korea from September 19 to October 4, 2014, while the current games are being held in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia from August 18 to September 2, 2018.
