Tajik leader expresses concern about increase in crime in the country

Date:

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has expressed serious concern about increase in crime in the country.  According to him, the number of reported crimes has doubled in Tajikistan over the past decade.

His concern came during an address to meeting that took place in Dushanbe on November 10 on the occasion of National Police Day in Tajikistan, according to the Tajik president’s official website.  .

“For example, there were less than 12,000 reported crimes in the country in 2008.  In 2017, there were more than 22,000 reported crimes, and over the first nine months of this year alone, nearly 17,500 crimes have been reported in the country,” Rahmon said.

It means that the number of reported crimes has nearly doubled over the past decade, Tajik leader noted, adding that the number of serious crimes, thefts and cases involving illegally bearing and possessing weapons has increased 1.5 times.

According to him, 2,300 traffic accidents reported in Tajikistan in 2017-2018 have left 721 dead and 2,370 injured people.

Emomali Rahmon also expressed serious concern about increase in the number of juvenile crimes.  “In 2017, there were 690 juvenile crimes reported, and over the first nine months of this year alone, 734 juvenile crimes have been reported in the country,” Rahmon said.

The head of state also expressed serious concern about increase in the number of official malfeasances committed by law enforcement officers.

“160 official malfeasances committed by police officers, included 113 corruption related crimes, were reported in 2017-2018,” Rahmon noted.
