Tajikistan’s Danghara and Azerbaijan’s Sumgayit may become sister cities.

Tajikistan’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Rustam Soli, on April 16 met with Zakir Farajev, Mayor of the Azeri city of Sumgayit, to discuss issues related to further expansion of economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation, according to the Tajik MFA information department.

They reportedly also discussed the issue of establishing sister city relationships between Tajikistan’s Danghara and Sumgayit.

While in Sumgayit, Ambassador Soli visited industrial enterprises to discuss with their top managers the possibility of establishing cooperation between them and Tajik industrial enterprises.

Danghara is a town in the Khatlon province of Tajikistan.  It is the capital of Danghara district.  Danghara is the hometown of Tajikistan's President, Emomali Rahmon.

Sumgayit is the third-largest city in Azerbaijan, located near the Caspian Sea, about 31 kilometers away from the capital, Baku. The city has a population of around 298,000, making it the third-largest city in Azerbaijan after the capital Baku and Ganja.  Two settlements are within the city administration: Jorat and Haji Zeynalabdin, a settlement named after oil businessman and philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev.  It is home to Sumgayit State University.
