Tajik authorities expected to launch project aimed at completing electrification of rural areas

Asia-Plus

Villages in the Gorno Badakhshan Autonomous Region (GBAO) and Khatlon province will be connected to the centralized power supply system, according to the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MoEWR).

An official source at a MoEWR says the ministry and Barqi Tojik (state-run power utility company) have begun preparatory work on the project aimed at electrification of rural areas in Khatlon province and GBAO.

The project reportedly provides for connecting 105 villages in Khatlon province and Gorno Badakhshan to the centralized power supply system.

The project includes construction of associated infrastructure, micro hydropower plants as well as individual solar and wind systems, the source added.

According to data from the MoEWR, about 2.5 percent (200,000 people) of Tajikistan’s population has not yet been connected to the power supply systems.  Mainly, newly constructed settlements reportedly remain without electricity.
