Rahmon holds talks with Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office

Date:

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon yesterday met here with Vladimir Voronkov, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office, who arrived in Dushanbe for participation in the High-Level International Conference on “International and Regional Cooperation on Countering Terrorism and its Financing through Illicit Drug Trafficking and Organized Crime,” according to the Tajik president’s official website.

In the course of the talks, Rahmon and Voronkov reportedly discussed a broad range of issues related to cooperation between Tajikistan and the United Nations.

Tajik leader noted that expansion of cooperation with the United Nations is one of priorities of Tajikistan’s foreign policy.

The two also exchanged views on providing regional security and factors affecting stability in the region.  They, in particular, noted that it is necessary to take joint efforts and strength bodies combating modern threats.

“Tajikistan condemns international terrorism and is supporter of the early implementation of the regional Joint Action Plan (JPoA) for the implementation of the Global UN Counter Terrorism Strategy in Central Asia and the Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism,” Tajik leader noted during the meeting.

Rahmon and Voronkov also pointed to the necessity of taking specific measures to resolve the complicated political situation in Afghanistan and intensify measures against terrorist groups, including ISIS, in the northern part of Afghanistan, the president’s website said.

Vladimir Voronkov was appointed as Under-Secretary-General of the newly created United Nations Counter-Terrorism Office on June 15, 2017.
